Beyond Orientation: Policies, Purpose and Culture

At the School,  newly appointed, promoted, redesignated and transferred staff embarked on a journey that extended far beyond learning workplace procedures.

The week-long orientation program was intentionally designed not simply to introduce staff to policies and systems, but to immerse them in the values, culture and purpose that define KSG. Bringing together officers from different departments and campuses, the program became a platform for learning, self-reflection, collaboration and a renewed commitment to public service.

The program discussed content on constitutional and ethical foundations of public service, whose understanding is vital for the staff undertaking the induction particularly, the National Values and Principles of Governance (Article 10) and the Values and Principles of Public Service (Article 232) of the Constitution.

Other presentations sensitized participants on key support functions and the services that enable the institution lead in its mandate. Sessions covered access to knowledge resources through library services; strategic communication, branding and stakeholder engagement; and administration services, including logistics, security and facilities management.

Participants also gained insights into procurement and supply chain processes, hospitality and conference services, ICT infrastructure and cybersecurity, as well as strategic planning, performance management, quality management systems and institutional reporting.

Additional deliberations were on personal and professional well-being, covering retirement benefits, financial planning, wealth creation, the Performance Management System, and physical wellness.

In a public sector often defined by policies, budgets and institutional reforms, the School chose to begin with attitudes and values that fundamentally shape public service. Among key takeaways was the understanding that institutions are ultimately shaped by the character, choices and actions of the people within them. Public service is also about legacy created through daily decisions, the trust nurtured through conduct, and the collective responsibility to leave institutions stronger for those who follow.

Organized by the Human Resource and Management Department, it is anticipated that the orientation created valuable opportunities for interaction, networking and collaboration among staff from different departments and campuses.
