APSD 2026 – Universal Water and Sanitation Access Across Africa
The Kenya School of Government took part in the Africa Public Service Day 2026 whose theme was “Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063.”
The choice of water and sanitation as the central focus reflected one of Kenya’s most pressing development priorities. Although there has been significant progress in expanding access to clean water and sanitation services, rapid urbanization, climate change, ageing infrastructure and increasing water demand continue to pose major challenges.
The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programs Hon. Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, emphasized that transformation is anchored on the goal of meaningful change to the lives of Kenyans while Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya, Principal Secretary, urged for investment in people through leadership development, skills enhancement and fair career progression.
At a high-level discussion moderated by KSG ‘s senior faculty, Mr. Simon Angote, panelists explored practical ways for improving water security through digital transformation, climate-resilient infrastructure, and innovative financing mechanisms.
For KSG, this presents an opportunity to deepen collaboration with water sector institutions and climate change stakeholders while advancing capacity development. Through its specialized centres on devolution, environmental governance and partnerships, the School is well positioned to support institutions in delivering sustainable and resilient public services.
A defining resolution of APSD 2026 is that universal access to safe water and sanitation by 2063 will not be achieved through infrastructure alone. It will require deliberate investment in human capital, innovation, climate resilience, and enduring multi-stakeholder partnerships.
